Let: Dont hide your light (9000 fireflies)
Full Disclosure, despite all the bows and dresses that I love to wear, I am a wrestling fan. I love watching all of the characters that each of the wrestlers have and the stories that they tell by their videos, promos, and wrestling matches. One particular wrestler and the nicknames he gives the fans resonate with me. Whenever he was nearby, the whole arena darkened and everyone all of a sudden turned on their flashlights on their cellphones. However, at that moment, they weren’t just flashlights to him. They were fireflies that lit up the dark arena.
I remember my own fireflies at Longwood University. It was a scary time coming in as a transfer student, not knowing most of the students, and the only organization that I had planned on joining was BCM . My first BCM experience, I saw a group of girls sitting together, laughing, and cheering each other on if they had to speak at our large group meeting. The next week, I saw one of the girls at the Bible Study in greek letters, when I thought “Wait, she’s wearing greek letters, and she’s so happy!” After more searching, I had discovered that my campus had a Christian Sorority named Sigma Alpha Omega and boy they lit the campus up just like the fireflies at the arena. I saw how joyful they were at BCM dinners, Bible Studies, or even just to say hi to me even though I was a PNM.
During the fall semester, and after attending an info night, I made a decision. I wanted to be a firefly that lit up my campus just like the girls from SAO so that others could see the light of Jesus whether it was through service events, Spiritual development events, or just eating dinner in the BCM building.
Being in a dark place, like being a in a dark arena, or being a new student at a college can be scary, so we tend to turn on our flashlights so that we can are safe. When we give our lives to Jesus, we then have the chance to shine our lights, bringing hope to the world. However, there a times when fear can make us want to hide our light. This can include fear of rejection, fear of ridicule, fear of conflict, fear of inadequacy, fear of failure, fear of loss, and fear of persecution. However, God gave us the power of love and self control so that we are unashamed of the Gospel (2 Timothy 1:7-8). So, should we hide our light under a bushel? No!! God gave us friends, whether in our campus ministry, churches, or in SAO so that we can shine our lights together and light up the world.
Bible Readings: Matthew 5:14-16 Ephesians 4:8-10 2 Timothy 1:7-8
