Check Your Flashlight (Online Bible Study)

Check Your Flashlight

Colossians 2:6-7

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.

Why might a flashlight troubleshoot?

Check the batteries: They may be dead, low on charge, or inserted incorrectly.

Inspect battery contacts: Look for corrosion or dirt, which can block the electrical connection. Clean the contacts with a cloth dipped in alcohol or vinegar.

Inspect the switch: The switch mechanism can fail. Try pressing it multiple times or cleaning around the button. A faulty switch may need to be cleaned or replaced.

Replace the bulb or LED: The bulb or LED can burn out over time, especially in older models.

1.To Glow for Christ we must check our power source. With a traditional flashlight this might include making sure that it has batteries. In your Bibles, highlight or underline part b of Colossians 2:6 and write in your journal, our power source is Christ.

Colossians 2:6

BLB writes this as maintaining progress, to continue in Christ means to make it an everyday progress, not a one time thing

Heart Check: Are you connected to Christ?

2.Glowing for Christ also means checking if the batteries are charged. If we are rooted in the wrong thing, the power source in Christ dwindles down our spiritual flashlight. .

Colossians 2:7a Rooted

BLB includes the words: to strengthen, to render firm, to fix, establish, cause a person or a thing to be thoroughly grounded.

Heart Check: What current things are you “causing you to be thoroughly grounded”? Honest question: Are your roots in Christ or something else?

3. Glowing for Christ includes checking our motives. Our spiritual flashlight will not shine if the batteries are in the wrong way.

Colossians 2:7b Built up in Him

Motives are the underlying reasons, needs, or desires that drive a person or animal to act, think, or behave in a certain way, serving as the "why" behind actions, ranging from biological urges like hunger to complex social goals like seeking approval or power

Heart check: What current priorities are you building your habits on?

4.Glowing for Christ includes making sure our faith is strong. Our spiritual flashlight will not shine if the contacts are corroded.

Colossians 2:7c Strengthened in the faith as you were taught

BLB defines strengthen as “to make firm”

Making firm includes making sure to use our spiritual disciplines such as prayer, confession, and studying scripture.

Heart check: Is your faith being strengthened? What spiritual disciplines do you feel that you might grow better in.

5.Glowing for Christ becomes brighter when we show gratitude. Our spiritual flashlight will not shine if our glow is dull.

Colossians 2:7d Overflowing with thankfulness

BLB defines overflowing as “ to be abundantly furnished with, to have in abundance, abound in, to be in affluence”

In the acronym for the word GLOW, W stands for witness. Becoming a witness becomes stronger when the lost see us as grateful.

Heart check: List 10 things you are grateful for right now.
