National Service Week is a chapter-wide event that Sigma Alpha Omega participates in every year. The goal of this week is for your chapter to participate in activities of service in your community and campuses along with your other sisters all across the country.

National Service week will take place during the 2nd week of February every year. Our chapters are required to complete:

-1 Week-long Service Event

-5 Daily service projects (one per day)

-1 National Service Week Participation Sheet

There are a variety of creative and practical ways to serve your campuses and communities but this year we have some unique ideas! If you have an idea to share, please email vicepresident@sigmaalphaomega.org or your local chapter.

UNIQUE SERVICE IDEAS

Blessing Bags: Fill a plastic zip-lock bag with small items from the travel section at Wal-mart. Portable deodorants, mini toothpastes, dental floss, mini-shampoos etc. Stick in some food, (crackers, granola bars, things you can buy in bulk) and you’re done with your Blessing Bag! Hand them out at a service event or to homeless. Keep a few around with you in your car throughout the year and bless people as you see them!

Hospital Survivor Kits: Head over to a local Maternity Ward, and pass out Hospital Survior kits to new moms! (Call ahead first to check if your hospital will allow this donation!) Include hairties, chocolate, lip balm, anything that might make their hospital stay a little nicer!

Book Drive: Collect gently used books, Cd’s DVD and donate them schools, children’s hospitals, or family shelters

Brighten a Mood as you Brighten a Room: Decorate a hospital floor and patient rooms for the holiday! Make Valentines day about the love you have for your brothers and sisters in Christ and for God’s children and love someone by making their day a little brighter!

Lending a Helping Hand: Have each member of your chapter vow to do a random-act-of-kindness to three neighbors of theirs over the course of a week! Offer to shovel driveways, give a coffee to a studying student, bake a batch of cookies. Give a knock and you’ll be surprised how God will use you to serve!

New Beginnings Make New Endings

I recently saw this quote, "No one can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending" (Unknown). I really began to think about that statement. The conclusion was that we don't start over; but we begin again right where we are, making things better in our lives. As a believer in Christ, it is not about saying I will do this and I won't do that and then dropping the idea or falling short. It is more about asking the Lord to help us each day, to fall deeper and deeper in love with Him. This way our focus will be set on the things of heaven and not on all this earthly stuff. If I were to make a New Year resolution, it would be to have a deeper commitment, a deeper love, and a deeper worship for the Lord. In the beginning of this past year, He spoke to me in that still small voice in prayer and said, "I am more than enough. I am more than enough in every area of your life." He also said to tell others the same thing.

Oh the Places You'll Go!

Have you ever read the book “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by the incredible Dr. Seuss? If not, stop reading this and go get a copy of this amazing piece of literature. If you have, then I’m sure you remember the great encouragement given throughout. For example... “Today is your day! You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!” “Wherever you fly, you’ll be best of the best. Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.” “And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and ¾ percent guaranteed.)” “Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” But, the real life advice comes in the pages between the above quotes, where we are reminded that sometimes we “won’t”... (see what I did there?!?
