The Top Ten Best Things About Fall
It's that magical time of the year again!
Here in Alabama we just had our first night below 70 degrees since who knows how long, and let me just tell you.... it was ah-mazing! A breath of fresh air! A relief, after our long and oppressive summer heat. I'm told it will not last long, that we will be back up over 90 in the next few days. But, man. It was great while it lasted, and I can't wait for the days coming up. The ones where each morning greets you with a cold, swift peck on the check. I'll try to be patient.
I woke up on Saturday morning with my sweet baby girl, brewed some coffee (out of necessity more than anything else), and went on a walk with our dog, Oliver. There was a light breeze, Cora and I were both clad in long sleeves and pants, and we just strolled around for a bit taking it all in. This is the good stuff. This must be what the Lord intended when he said, "There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil" (Ecc. 2:24).
Which leads me to the subject of this post: the top ten best things about fall! Drum roll please!
10. Stepping on crunchy leaves. There was absolutely NOTHING more delectable than strolling across front campus at Georgia College, or across the Drill Field at Mississippi State, and crunching through the fallen leaves.
9. Pumpkins.... everywhere! You know you love 'em.
8. Apples.... everywhere! Come on. Apple pies, apple cobblers, apple tarts, apple fritters, apple butter, apple scones, baked apples, caramel apples, apple cider... you get the point. Apples are awesome fall food.
7. Warm, cozy, delicious clothing options. Swim suit season is finally over, need I say more?
6. Holidays. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas. The trifecta. What's not to love?
5. Food. Two items on this list could fall under this category. I love food. I especially love "fall food." Homemade soups and stews. YUM.
4. Football! (Can I get an amen?!) Mu, Chi, Alpha Omicron. Y'all know what I mean.
3. The SMELLS. Oh.My.Goodness, the smells of fall.
2. The first fireplace fire. Warm toastyness all through the house.
And the NUMBER ONE best thing about Fall?
1. Watching the seasons change. Fall is short down here in the deep south. We jump pretty quickly from summer to winter. On Halloween you may be wearing five plus layers beneath your Princess Jasmine costume one year, and maybe wishing you hadn't selected the grizzly bear costume the next. There has been more than one Christmas that we were outside in short sleeves jumping on the new trampoline, or playing with the new gadgets we'd received. So we take what we can get when those mornings begin to turn. The anticipation of all of the above, watching the beauty of God's perfect timing happen right before our eyes. There is truly nothing greater, truly nothing more awe inspiring, than watching the living God at work.
Hail State, y'all. Enjoy a nice, warm pumpkin spiced latte for me. Alas, the type one diabetes forbids me from partaking in that precious treasure.
