Our Inheritance
I’m sure you’ve all heard this before, but we are all children of God. But have you heard that we are the co-heirs with Christ? This is a phrase that I was not super familiar with before writing this post. I have always heard that I am a child of God, and I have been proud to be a child of God, but being called a co-heir with Christ was new. In simple terms, it means that all of us are adopted children of God. We have been fully welcomed into His family, and we are entitled to a share in Jesus’s inheritance of eternal glory, salvation, and blessings. This inheritance is not like the physical inheritance you may receive after a loved one passes, and it is worth much, much more.
Romans 8:16-17 says, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs–heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.”
But what, exactly, do we inherit?
1 Peter 1:4 says, “To an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in Heaven for you,”
Titus 3:7 says, “So that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
As co-heirs, we inherit eternal life, all of God’s spiritual blessings and possessions, and His divine approval. What belongs to Jesus also belongs to us. However, this inheritance isn’t just a general gift; it’s something that must personally be received.
Galatians 3:26 says, “So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith,”
Ephesians 1:5 says,”He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Chirst, in accordance with his pleasure and will–”
Inheritance comes through faith (Galatians 3:26), adoption (Ephesians 1:5), and grace (Titus 3:7). It also comes through your relationship with Christ; since inheritance belongs to Him, it now belongs to us by association. This is a spiritual inheritance that we are all currently benefiting from. We have access to God’s peace, guidance, and the right to pray directly to the Father. In the future, we gain our physical inheritance, a new body, a home in Heaven, and a world without pain. This inheritance is not a prize we gain alone; it’s a treasure we can gain together as sisters. It’s a supportive hand when we see a sister carrying a burden alone. It’s a shared destiny that outlasts every earthly bond, anchored in the truth that we all hold equal status at our Father’s table.
Which part of your inheritance as a co-heir do you need to lean into most today? His peace, His guidance, or the reminder of His divine approval?
