Filling up the Cups of Others- By SAOF
September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and a great time to fill up the cup of others. I know for me that sometimes I have a hard time figuring out what to do or how to do this biblically. This devotion will explore taking action to fill up the cup of others during this time while ensuring that your own cup is maintained.
Taking action:
Philippians 4:13 says “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” You can use the strength that God has given you to support and fill up the cups of others. You can fill up others cups in a Godly way and He will shine through you. Three ways that you can fill up the cups of others by taking action is by listening to others, offering practical support and praying for or over someone.
Listening to others
The first thing you can do is to spend time listening to others' stories. You can do this by spending quality time with others and listen to their stories. You can do this by getting coffee with others, taking walks around campus, or just having a girls night. After listening to others you can give encouragement that everything is going to be ok and that support is available if need be. One way to provide encouragement is by sending encouragement cards for Teal Diva, especially during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. This leads to offering practical support to others.
Offering practical support
Practical support is providing direct tangible works. Galatians 6:2 states “carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the laws of Christ.” Scripture reminds us that serving others is a priority. Applying your skills in an impactful way is a great way to offer practical support. Think about skills that you enjoy, are good at and what energizes you. Those skills are going to be the best ways to provide practical support to others. For me, I have the creative skills of a potato but I am very good at planning and organization. Instead of helping paint a banner for convention, I would help set up times and a location to paint the banner and then supply snacks and drinks to those painting. Each talent that was given to us was given to us by God.
Praying for or over someone
Lastly, to fill up the cup of another is to pray for them. He is a great provider to all of us and is a great resource to fill up someone’s cup. Keep whoever needs their cup filled up in your daily prayers. In addition, after spending time listening to others and offering practical support, you can spend some time praying over them to fill up their cup.
But what if my cup is empty:
Psalm 103:8 states: "The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love" You cannot give what you do not have, pouring from an empty cup leads to depletion, further exhaustion and resentment. You need to make sure to fill up our own cup and correctly. Although, it may seem like it is all up to us to fill out our own cups, He is always there for you.
How do I fill up my own cup?
The answer is simple: spend time with Him! In exchange for vulnerability and trust in Him, he will fill up your cup to the brim. Allow Him to fill your cup up and be receptive to what He is saying to you. You can do this by attending bible studies, pray to him, read your Bible and go to Church. Always remember that God has your back and is there for you.
Questions to ask yourself:
Have I filled up someone else’s cup recently?
Did I do this in a Godly manner?
Is my own cup filled in a Godly way?
Are my actions Godly?
